Editorial with Napoleón Habeica

I just finished an editorial for Celeste magazine with Napoleón Habeica as photographer and the lovely and sweet Kimberly Lamb as model (to keep an eye on this girl!).

The funniest thing of it all is that I posted on Napoleón's work a year and a half ago when Stella et Moi pointed it out to me once I spoke of Mexican magazine Baby Baby Baby... and life turns around and I end up working with him months later. It's been amazing. And it has kept me busy as hell too. ^_^

Special thanks to Sonia, Lessa, Suzy and Vanessa, my guardian angels.

The Museum Oscar goes to...

Our friend Missy, from Texas, is in town to attend the 2006-2007 Annual Awards by the U.S. Art Critics Association, in plain words, the Oscars of the Museum Exhibitions.

The ceremony was held on March 17 at the Guggenheim Museum in NY, and two of the awards were awarded to Fashion exhibitions...

As important as it sounds the event, I couldn't find any website that support my words so all I can say is that I have my friend Missy to back up my post!.

Best Architecture or Design Show

- First Place: Poiret; King of Fashion. At The Metropolitan Museum of New York.
Curators: harold Koda & Andrew Bolton

- Second Place: Skin + Bones: Parallel Practices in Fashion & Architecture. At the MOCA in L.A.
Curator: Brooke Hodge

And I can brag about my posting of them both! ;)

I <3 You

Love is definitely in the air... two posts in a row about love!... this time about my love for Mexican label TEAMO.

TEAMO is Roberto and Rafa, two kids from Mexico DF that decided to start something together and ended up designing really interesting clothing, and not only.

Roberto very kindly answered a couple of questions for bobble-bee.

México is in vogue, no wonder why...

1.- What's TEAMO? ... Quién es TEAMO?

TEAMO is a concept that involves fashion, the label's main reflexion, but not only.
Rafa Cuevas is a musician and also throws parties, and Roberto Sánchez is an illustrator and media speaker. We do styling together so this way we try that everything done in our label is done with love: there are pieces that might be rough and aggressive, while others are very pretty and organic, but all are inspired by our love. That is what made us create TEAMO two years ago.

2.- You design fashion but also do styling for magazines, promote music ... what did come first and what did come last?

Well, the firs thing was to meet each other. It's funny because that same day our group of friends met each other as well, we all met at theopening of photographer Regina Pozo here in México DF.
After that day all started to happen organically, Roberto lived in Cuernavaca and Rafael in México DF. The started to date for a month, decided to live together and build up something together. That's the way TEAMO was born, we have always been surrounded by very talented people that never give up their artistic dreams. That gave us also faith in what we do.

Things are rolling, nice and strong. Let's say that a little water drop fulfilled the bottle: firs Rafa and me met, then we dated, moved together, TEAMO was born and so forth.

Regarding the music, Rafa was in a band called Dragkillers together with painter and producer Mario Varguez, an electro band that was very successful.
I had some friend in DF like Zemmoa, an electro pop singer here in México, also Regina Pozo was my friend and she put me in contact with several people, the same did Juan Pablo Bastarrachea, who is now director together with more people of Discos Tormento which has Rafa under its wing.

3.- What can you tell me of the project Clínica Store? ... Y Clínica Store?

In fact that project was started for two friends of ours, also designers, Denise Marchebout and Enrique González, both Rafa's friends from Guadalajara, his hometown.

They came to the city and created the store almost two years ago. Then, just by chance, Enrique leaves the store and it's when TEAMO and Mancandy, another fashion label made by Andrés Jiménez, were invited to collaborate with Denise in this project. We've been almost two months now. We are really happy with this because even before being partners of it, our collections were sold here and now we are part of it. We don't sell anywhere else now, only here. The concept of it all is awesome, it's called "Clínica" (Clinic), it's a Fashion Clinic!.

4.-
Mexico Fashion Week is around the corner. How's everything going? ...

We are doing pretty good, the collection is almost done but hey, it's really around the corner!!!!! but everything will be perfect, we think that as long as one's working, things will turn as one desires.
Although the truth is that we are a little dissapointed with the organization, I don't know how other fashion weeks work but each time we get a letter from the organization it make us think if it is really worth it. But anyway, it is our first edition so let's see.

5.- What's the name of your new collection? ... Cómo se llama vuestra nueva colección?

It doesn't have a name, but it has a concept behind it. It evolves around the animals and their night lives. It's a little sarcastic and funny, very clean and dark.

6.- How is living in México DF? ... Cómo se vive en México DF?

It's beautiful but also very difficult.
We that work in the fashion industry, where the support is not very clear or often, we need to work in more than one thing to make a living.
The city itself is really pretty. It's amazing to think that being one of the biggest cities in the world those who work in the same business know each other!. There are a lot of casualties and if you don't keep your eyes open you might miss them and don't see them anymore.

7.- So is México DF for ever or you have plans tomove somewhere else? ...

We'd love to live in other cities but right now México is a virgin space with a lot of potencial for fashion and art proposals as ours, that is why we want to keep on doing things here and later going away to share those things.

8.- Mexican Art and Fashion ... Arte y Moda Mexicana.

Art, we like illustrator Cynthia Yee and photographers Tony Solís and Andrés Jiménez. In music we like Porter and in fashion, designers Denise Marchebout, Marvin y Quetzal and EGR.

Roberto: Yo soy Dios

11.- Who would you like to send your greetings? ... A quien quereis saludar?

In Love With Skye Parrott

There's very little information about photographer Skye Parrot other than what's written in her website, but the importance of her work in fashion publications is indisputable: former Manager Editor at Self Service and studio manager for Nan Goldin, Skye is now publishing for big time magazines such 10+, Lula, The Blow Up or Preen.

One of those girls you really want to know.

080 Barcelona

I think is wonderful and really inspiring that so many institutions in Spain promote young and upcoming designers through catwalks and fashion week-ends, but I also think that the fact that there's so many of them (Cibeles and Ego in Madrid, Pasarela Abierta in Murcia, 080 Barcelona in Barcelona...) is not helping too much the designers: press gets dizzy and poor (too many flights to catch), and ends up assisting only few shows. Energy scatters.
Unfortunately this fact can be read whether as an effort from the Spanish fashion industry to support young and upcoming designers or as a war among cities on which one gets the most press and buzz... you never know.
I won't be able to change much with my dissertation though, so here is a little selection of the designers that showed at 080 Barcelona not long ago (March 5-7), a really cool platform if truth is said. Collections AW 08-09

-------------------

No sé.

If We Ran It

The image “http://www.ifweranit.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/800px-cole_thomas_the_architect-s_dream_1840.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

Michael Romanowicz is a young guy (quite young actually, but let's keep the age aside) whose ideas keep my mind moving every time I meet him.

His latest enterprise, together with Marissa Shrum, is If We Ran It, a web-blog where contributors' requisite is to be under 30 and have something interesting to say.

The site is divided basically in 4 categories: people, ideas, actions and effects...

- If the article is focused on a person, call it artist, designer or cousin, then it goes to people.
- If the article it's a new material / dress/ item / design, then it goes to check it.
- If something's happening like a fashion show, then it goes to doing.
- And if "Gucci changes their line based on the trend", then it goes to effect.

After six months of delay (the launch was due by August 07) the site is already online and although brand new and little, the posted posts have no waste.
Still no fashion, but hopefully someone will post something soon...

Pasarela Abierta

I've been invited by Spanish label Berlin-based potipoti to style their AW08-09 collection catwalk at Pasarela Abierta (April 18th and 19th) in the beautiful coastal town of Murcia.

This is such a beautiful thing that's happening because it's the first time i will style a catwalk and also for the fact that I'm coming back to my country after two years of being absentee.

Pasarela Abierta (Open Catwalk) was created in 2002 to support and give a platform to young designers that couldn't have access to the Spanish official catwalk, Cibeles.

Looking at past editions and the list of designers that's showing this year, I must admit that the selection and quality has really improved over the years. This competition has become a real window for really interesting designer, and I will be really excited to meet in personn people like Gori de Palma, Manuel Bolaño or Pedro y El Lobo, who I interviewed for bobble-bee in November 2007.

--------------------------------------

New Magazine. News Paper. NEWWORK in Town

There's never been so many magazines around as nowadays.

Every time I go to Universal News (a popular news stand in NY) I just get really lost at the quantity of new publications that every month hit the stands... no that i'm complaining but, is there work for so many people?.

For those who know me that might sound like a very funny rhetorical question coming from my mouth... me?, who is building up a new magazine... in any case, my point is to introduce a new magazine, another one, but this one is a little special.

NEWWORK is brought to life featuring the work of 7 artists solely from New York and it combines fashion, art, politics and design in a newspaper format rather than in glossy paper.

The printing quality is quite nice as it's the work featured inside. I can only find one "but", and that's the way we'll be able to storage such publication... not very easily i would say, but hey.
Let's say well-come to the new work.

* special thanks to Michael Romanowicz for the images

The Girls of Catalina Bartolomé

My billowing and wonderful friend Samantha is the best searcher of photography-gems that I know.
She discovered the work of photographer Catalina Bartolomé, who has one of the most beautiful names in photography I've ever heard.
She's Argentinian, and proud to be female.

The First Supermodels. part I

I'm definitely not one of those souls who misses the old times models with their elegance, allure and attitude, because I actually think that we now have amazing girls who perfectly know how to put out there the look of our time; Lara Stone, Sasha Pivovarova, Iekeliene Stange...

But It's true though that there are way too many amazing models from the past who are being forgotten too fast! so let's review the faces of those who started the concept of being a supermodel yeeears before of the supermodel era in 1980's...

Dovima.
You might remember Dovima thanks to the movie Funny Face, where she played Marlon, the empty brain model who's posing for Fred Aster with the Giacometti-alike sculpture and later at the bookstore where Hepburn was working...

Dovima was born in New York, in the neighborhood of Jackson Heights in Queens.
She was believed to be the highest-paid Manhattan high-fashion model of her time ($60 an hour) in the 1950s.

She lost her only daughter, Alison, when divorced from her husband, Jack Golden, who used to beat her so often that sometimes she wasn't able to go to work. As über famous white-haired model Carmen dell'Orefice would remember: "Sadly she could only be with men who beat her. I'd find her on my doorstep black and blue, and I'd take her in and she'd live with me." (source)
In 1974 she moved to Ft Lauderdale, Florida, where she married West Hollingsworth, a bartender co-worker.
Dovima died in 1990 of liver cancer.

Dovima with Elephants, by Richard Avedon
Dovima is wearing the first gown designed by YSL at Dior

Lisa Fonssagrives.
Swedish-born, an original ballet dancer who actually moved to Paris to continue her career as a dancer, Lisa married photographer Irving Penn and was credited to be the first super model in the fashion history.

Famous for her 17 inches waistline which could be measure anytime thanks to the tape measure the model carried with her to prove it for those who didn't believe it... when asked how she could maintain such figure she would answer by eating regular tiny meals: for example, six grapes, a cracker, a slice of cheese and a gulp of wine. (source).

After three decades of modeling (1930-1940-1950) Lisa continued her professional career designing clothing (at one point she would do a collection of leisure wear for Lord & Taylor) and sculpting (she was represented by Marlborough Gallery).

A book with the most notable images of the model, Lisa Fonssagrives: Three Decades of Classic Fashion Photography, chronicles Lisa's modeling years and "establishes her role in bringing fashion photography to the level of high art".

Woman in Palace. 1951 (Lisa Fonssagrives by Irving Penn)

Mary Jane Russell.

Mary Jane Russell, a favorite of the photographers Louise Dahl-Wolfe (Russell is estimated to be modeled for about 30 % of Dahl-Wolfe's photos) and Irving Penn, started her career in 1948 represented by Ford Model Agency in NY.

She became, together with her husband (who she met while studying art at Teaneck High School), an activist in zoning and environmental issues in Pound Ridge, N.Y.

The couple was notorious for their recounting of their courtship in "Love Stories of World War II" by CNN talk show host Larry King. (source)

Russell died in 2003 at 77 years old.

--------------------------------

Three Decades of Classic Fashion Photography.

Mary Jane Russell.

(fuente)

Hussein Chalayan Named Creative Director of Puma

Wow... this new has really surprised me for good.

German sport's wear label Puma has named British-based fashion designer Hussein Chalayan its Creative Director and this seems to be a deal to last... "This isn't a short-term relationship; this is a marriage" (Chalayan).

I still remember when he confessed in an interview to i-D magazine in their March 07 issue how difficult is to survive in the fashion market for a designer like him, whose work is focused more on creativity and experimentation rather than commerciability ...

"There is the pressure to carry on doing what I want to do and on the other hand I have to survive. What would make me happier right now is for my sales to become bigger."

So i guess finally he's seeing his dreams coming to a happy end. Good for him.

----------------------------
