commuun

In a conversation with Costume Designer Jorge Jara, the topic went on how good fashion schools are nowadays for upcoming designers.
He commented how he considered the Arnhem Academy of the Arts in the Netherlands as one of the best in the world and I totally agreed with him because every designer that gets to finish that school (it is known as one of the best and one of the hardest) is with no doubt a designer to keep an eye on.
I just discovered the work of Japanese designers Kaito Hori and Iku Furudate and their label commuun. Hori studied at the Arnhem Academy of the Arts and Ikurudate had formal design training at Tokyo's Bunka Fashion College, a university founded in 1919 and responsible for the fisrt fashion magazine in Japan, So-en, and have among its alumni Kenzo and Yohji Yamamoto.
Their collections are such a wonderful instance of minimalism, so pure they compete with the very best of a former Jil Sander.

wendy: normally i find them cleaning my room... every single piece of paper i see in shows, exhibitions etc, i bring with me home... then they hang around my room until one day, like today, i have time to go through them to throw what's not important and see what i was missing...

hihi, we were friends with kaito when we studied in Arnhem! I did not study fashion, but I can say it always seemed to me as the hardest course we had. And I totally agree, almost everyone I know who had a good final exam, is indeed a designer to keep an eye on.
